The government has approved a new private university named Grameen University, which will be established in the capital, Dhaka.
The Ministry of Education issued an approval letter on Monday to Md. Ashraful Hasan, Chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees. The university has been granted temporary approval under 22 conditions for its establishment and operation.
With this approval, the total number of private universities in the country now stands at 116. However, some of these institutions have yet to commence operations.
Among the conditions set by the government, the university's temporary approval will remain valid for seven years. It must adhere to all regulations and conditions outlined in the Private University Act of 2010. The university must have a minimum of 25,000 square feet of space, either owned or rented, and must establish at least three faculties with a minimum of six departments under them. Additionally, the university must maintain a reserved fund of at least 1.5 crore BDT in any scheduled bank.
The approval comes as part of the government's efforts to expand higher education opportunities in the country while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
