At least 20 individuals, including three police members, were injured in several clashes between police and factory workers in Gazipur on Monday night following a death of a female garment employee.
Deceased Sabina Akter, 28, a worker of Golden Rifit Garments Ltd, was critically injured after a microbus ran over her in Sadar upazila's Bagher Bazar area while she was crossing Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on her way to the factory from home after ifter.
Locals rushed her to a nearby private hospital. But she, later, succumbed to her injuries on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital that led to the clash.
As the news of her death spread, fellows took to the street and started protest, halting vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The angry protesters tried to made vandalism at some factories. To control the situation police tried to remove the workers. Then the workers threw brick chips to police members that escalated several clashes.
The protesting workers vandalised vehicles on the highways, leaving some passengers injured. Later, army joined with the police to disperse the protesters from the road. They used sound grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the workers.
A tense situation is prevailing in the area.
