The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting online VAT returns until March 18 due to a technical glitch.
In a letter sent to the field offices of customs and value-added tax (VAT), the NBR said that the problem has arisen due to the increase in the number of simultaneous users and hardware.
Although the last day for submitting VAT returns was March 16, the deadline was extended as many taxpayers were unable to complete the VAT process.
NBR Member (VAT Policy) Dr Md Abdur Rouf said that the problem has arisen due to the rush of companies coming to submit returns.
The NBR notification said that a sudden technical complication arose on the last day of online return submission on March 16. As a result, it is not possible for taxpayers to submit their returns online on March 16. In this situation, the deadline for submitting online returns for the February 2025 tax period has been extended to March 18 instead of March 16.
Currently, about 3.25 lakh VAT registered companies file returns online, while 23 percent submit original documents.
According to NBR data, out of a total of 581,000 VAT registered companies, about 4 lakh firms file returns.
