BDSC's Hasib accused of death threats amid political controversy

Hasib Al Islam, Chief Organizer of the Dhaka University Committee of the Bangladesh Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BDSC) Dhaka University (DU) unit, has been accused of threatening to kill his two paternal cousins. Despite the victims filing a complaint, police allegedly dismissed the matter due to his political influence.

The allegations surfaced when Rakib Hasan Rudro, a student from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (2022-23 session), posted about the incident in a Facebook group named "Dhaka Bissobiddaly Shikhharti Sangsad."

“I have more documents regarding this threat,” Rudro wrote, sharing additional voice recordings and screenshots. One of these recordings reportedly captures Hasib telling his grandfather that his uncles would be barred from entering their family home after their father’s death. However, while the post and screenshots reference two cousins, the call recording mentions two uncles, leading to some confusion.

One of the alleged victims, Mahmudur Rahman Tanvir, a CSE student at United International University, detailed a family scuffle over property to Daily Observer.

“My father and uncle jointly owned two sections of land. When my father spent a lot of money to level the ground, they dug it up, forcing water and garbage towards us,” Tanvir told the Daily Observer. He described how Hasib’s family positioned their toilet house at a higher elevation, making his family’s living conditions difficult.

According to Tanvir, his father faced direct threats. “Hasib called my father, saying, ‘You know me and my position. Do not let them enter the house. As long as you are alive, I won’t do anything, but after your death, make sure they don’t return.’”

When Tanvir’s family sought help from the police, the officer in charge allegedly dismissed the complaint lightly, suggesting an online General Diary (GD) instead. Local leaders also ignored their pleas, while Hasib’s father warned them not to raise the issue further.

In response, Hasib downplayed the incident, calling it an old family dispute. “Small land conflicts are common. Also, this happened before the July movement,” he told the Daily Observer. He further dismissed a separate accusation aired on Channel 24 about selling positions in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Sylhet. The channel later removed the report, fuelling speculation.

On Facebook, Hasib defended himself, saying he merely supervised the Sylhet divisional team of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement while SUST’s Galib Bhai handled leadership appointments. He claimed those who failed to secure positions started spreading false allegations against him. “Some Dhaka University pages are deliberately pushing a political agenda against me,” he wrote. “I will take legal action.”

Hasib also found himself at odds with Shibir (Islami Chhatra Shibir) after making a sarcastic post advising their members on social media conduct. This led to further backlash, with some speculating whether his recent accusations stem from his public stance against extremist groups.

As political tensions rise, questions remain about law enforcement’s handling of the case and the extent of Hasib’s influence. With both sides presenting conflicting narratives, the allegations add another layer of complexity to Dhaka University’s already charged student politics. Whether legal action follows or the controversy fades remains to be seen.
