Dhaka University has temporarily expelled 128 students for their alleged involvement in attacks on protesters during the July uprising, which took place between July 15 and August 5.
The decision was made during a syndicate meeting on Monday (March 17) based on the findings of an investigative committee formed to probe the incidents.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan confirmed the decision after the syndicate meeting. The expelled students are reportedly associated with the banned student organization, Chhatra League, though their identities have not been immediately disclosed.
When asked about the matter, Dhaka University Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed stated, "The university has temporarily expelled 128 students and formed an investigation committee headed by Syndicate Member Professor Dr. Tajmeri S. Islam. A final decision regarding those involved will be made based on the committee's report."
Earlier, on Thursday (March 13), the investigative committee, led by Associate Professor Kazi Mahfuzul Islam of the Law Department, submitted its report to the Vice-Chancellor. The report implicated several former students in the attacks and recommended the cancellation of their academic certificates based on the severity of their involvement.
The investigative committee's press release highlighted some of the most egregious incidents, including attacks on female students, assaults on injured protesters en route to Dhaka University Medical Center and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and obstruction of medical treatment for the injured.
The July uprising, which began as a protest against the reinstatement of quotas in government jobs, quickly escalated into a broader movement against authoritarian rule. During this period, students and activists faced violent crackdowns, with many injured and some killed. The university's decision to expel students involved in these attacks underscores its commitment to accountability and justice.
The expelled students will remain barred from the university pending the final decision of the investigation committee. This move has been widely seen as a step toward addressing the violence and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The university administration has emphasized its dedication to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
