The interim government has decided in principle to amend the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and establish a special tribunal dedicated to handling child rape cases.

The decision was made during a Council of Advisers meeting on Monday, chaired by Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus. The final approval is expected on Thursday, said Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.

The amendments will include provisions to shorten investigation and trial times for such cases, aligning with the government’s goal to ensure swift justice.

"There is no link between these amendments and the recent Magura case, as that trial will proceed swiftly based on existing laws," Dr. Nazrul clarified. He added that the DNA report for the Magura case is expected within two to three days, allowing for an expedited trial.

Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan highlighted the shortage of DNA labs as a key factor in delays. "Currently, there is only one DNA lab in the country, which is insufficient," she noted.
To improve forensic capabilities, the government has decided to set up two additional DNA labs in Chattogram and Rajshahi as soon as possible.

To further expedite trials, Adviser Rizwana announced that the government will appoint additional judges through a special Judicial Service Commission.

Addressing recent acts of vandalism targeting shrines, Adviser Rizwana warned that the government will take strict action against those involved.

"Anarchy in the name of destroying shrines will not be tolerated. The law will be enforced against anyone found responsible," she asserted.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting religious sites and ensuring justice for victims of sexual violence.
