Former Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan was placed on a four-day remand in connection with the murder case of Rafiqul Islam during the anti-discrimination student movement in the capital's Badda.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam on Monday granted the remand following hearings from both prosecution and defense.
The prosecution, led by Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki, sought five-day remand for further investigation, while defense lawyer Mizanur Rahman Badsha appealed for bail and remand cancellation. After hearing, the court rejected bail and approved four-day remand for questioning.
According to the statement, on July 19, when Rafiqul Islam, 37, was shot during a protest in front of Bismillah Residential Hotel in Badda. He, later, succumbed to his injuries on August 27. His uncle Muhammad Lutfor Rahman filed a case mentioning the name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 37 others.
Shajahan Khan was arrested on September 5 from Dhanmondi in Dhaka and since then he was on remand in several cases. Initially, on September 6, he was placed on a seven-day remand but was later sent to jail due to health concerns.
Shajahan Khan, an eight-time MP from Madaripur-2 and President of the Bangladesh Transport Workers’ Federation, served as the Shipping Minister from 2009.
