The government has so far recommended the withdrawal of 6,202 political harassment cases filed during the previous Awami League government's tenure until August 5 last year.
The central committee led by the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser formed by the Home Ministry has examined some 6,295 cases submitted for consideration by the field-level committee and has recommended the withdrawal of 6,202 cases as they are considered as political harassment cases.
The central committee has already met in eight meetings under the chairmanship of the Law Adviser to consider the proposals received by the field-level committee.
In order to withdraw the cases filed against the leaders and activists of various political parties for the purpose of political harassment during the 16 years of the previous government, the Home Ministry has formed the central committee at the Ministry level with the Law Adviser as the chairman and the district magistrates as the chairman for verification and selection at the field level committees.
The central committee was formed comprising seven members, with the Law Adviser as the chairman and the senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs as the members, and the district level committees were formed with the district magistrates as the chairman and the superintendent of police and public prosecutors as the members.
After verification and selection by the field level committee, the proposals for withdrawal of cases by the district magistrates and the solicitor's office of the Law and Justice Division are being sent to the central committee for consideration.
It is to be noted that this programme, undertaken jointly by the Ministries of Home Affairs and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, will continue to be implemented with the aim of saving innocent people and political leaders and activists from unnecessary harassment.
