BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that an election should be held as soon as possible. The responsibility should be given to an elected government to maintain stability.

He made this remarks on Sunday after attending at an Iftar event organized by the BFUJ and DUJ at the National Press Club.

Commenting on BNP’s commitment to reforms, he said, "We can say from the BNP side that we are committed to reforms. We submitted a 31-point demand long ago, when no one was talking about reforms. The proposals that are coming up today are not much different from those reforms."

Mirza Fakhrul further said, "When we open the newspaper today, we get disturbed. The situation has reached a point where there are killings, murders, and rapes. This is something that pains us. On the other hand, our young generation, especially students, is becoming intolerant. We also see institutions coming out on the streets with their demands. We all need to have patience regarding these matters."

Calling for an early election, the BNP Secretary General said, "We sincerely want the interim government’s head, Dr. Yunus, to implement the necessary reforms as soon as possible and move towards a national election. From our past experiences, we see that the longer the election is delayed, the more the fascist forces trying to defeat the people’s power in Bangladesh will rise. Even the extremists and militants are trying to take advantage of this situation."

He added, "We believe that the sooner the election is held, the sooner the elected representatives will be in the parliament. They will be able to manage the country while also implementing the necessary reforms together."

Other speakers at the event included Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, BNP Chairperson's advisor poet Abdul Hai Shikdar, BFUJ Acting President Obaidur Rahman Shahin, General Secretary Kader Gani Chowdhury, DUJ President Shahidul Islam, and General Secretary Khurshid Alam.

Also present at the Iftar event were AB Party President Mujibur Rahman Manju, Kamal Uddin Shobuj, Ilyas Khan, and others.
