A Dhaka court has denied bail to former Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder in a corruption case.
Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order on Sunday (March 16) rejecting the bail petition filed on Majumder’s behalf by Advocate Farzana Yasmin Rakhi. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) opposed the bail request during the hearing.
Majumder was arrested on October 3 last year by Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the Bashundhara Residential Area in Dhaka. Following his arrest, he was taken into remand in connection with a case linked to anti-discrimination student protests. He remains in custody at present.
On December 19, 2024, ACC filed a case against Majumder, alleging that he amassed illegal wealth amounting to Tk 253.4 million (approximately USD 2.3 million), which was inconsistent with his known sources of income.
The case was lodged by ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya. Subsequently, on January 29, 2025, the court approved a petition to formally show Majumder as arrested in the corruption case.
The legal proceedings against the former minister continue as he remains in detention, facing allegations of financial misconduct.
