Death sentence of 20 BUET students in Abrar murder case upheld

The High Court on Sunday upheld the death sentence of 20 BUET students and life imprisonment of the five others in Abrar Fahad murder case.

An HC bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain pronounced the judgement on the death references and appeals.

The hearing on these matters concluded on February 24, after which the case was kept under review.

In October 7, 2019, Abrar, 21, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death by Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university.

Later, his father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case with the Chawkbazar Police Station accusing 19 people.

A Dhaka court on December 8, 2021, sentenced 20 BUET students to death and five to life terms in jail for their involvement in the murder.
