United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has reiterated the UN’s continued support for Bangladesh in addressing the Rohingya crisis.
During an event at the new UN building in Gulshan on Saturday morning, Guterres assured that the UN remains committed to assisting Bangladesh in handling the humanitarian challenges posed by the Rohingya refugee situation.
According to a BSS report, he also acknowledged the significant contributions of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, emphasizing their crucial role in maintaining global peace and stability.
In addition to the Rohingya crisis, Guterres discussed the ongoing reform initiatives of Bangladesh’s interim government.
As part of his visit to Bangladesh, the UN chief attended a photo exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s UN membership and participated in the official flagraising ceremony at the newly established UN building in Gulshan.
Following a meeting with the UN Country Team in Bangladesh, Guterres toured the facility.
The new UN office building, ‘UN House in Bangladesh,’ was officially inaugurated in Gulshan by António Guterres and Adilur Rahman Khan, the Advisor on Industry, Housing, and Public Works.
Prominent figures present at the event included: Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor on Environment, Forests, and Climate Change; Gwyn Lewis, the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh.
This visit highlights the UN’s continued engagement with Bangladesh on key issues, including the Rohingya crisis, governance reforms, and environmental challenges.
