Dhaka University (DU) administration has dismissed media reports claiming that 70 were identified as being involved in the attack during last year’s quota reform movement.
A press release issued by DU’s Public Relations Office on Friday (March 14) clarified that this information is incorrect.
According to Associate Professor Kazi Mahfuzul Haque Supon, convener of the fact-finding committee and a faculty member of the Department of Law, the committee has reviewed reports stating that "70 teachers and 122 students were identified in the July 15 attack at DU." However, he stressed, "the claim regarding the identification of 70 teachers is not accurate."
The statement explained that, following the July uprising, students from various departments submitted complaints against more than seventy teachers, accusing them of opposing the movement, making derogatory comments about students’ attire, religious and political beliefs, engaging in discriminatory behaviour, and posting provocative content on social media. Some of these complaints were forwarded to the fact-finding committee.
However, the press release made it clear that these allegations were not the primary focus of the committee’s investigation. "Several independent committees are already looking into the complaints against the teachers," the statement added.
The DU administration’s clarification comes in response to widespread discussion surrounding the media reports, ensuring that the facts of the investigation are accurately represented.
