Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, has passed away.

After being on life support for several days, he passed away due to a brain stroke and hemorrhage at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in the capital on Thursday (March 13) at 10:15PM. However, the on-duty doctors officially declared him dead at 10:45PM.

Professor Arefin Siddique’s younger brother, Saifullah Siddique, told that his funeral prayer (namaz-e-janaza) will be held at the Dhanmondi Eidgah ground after Friday’s Jumma prayer (March 14). Later, he will be buried beside his parents at the Azimpur graveyard.

He also mentioned that if the Dhaka University administration wishes, a second Janaza for the former VC may be held at the university.

Earlier, on March 6, he suddenly collapsed while speaking at Dhaka Club (Ramna). He was then taken to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital, where he was initially treated and later transferred to the Neuro ICU. He was under the supervision of neurosurgeon Prof Nazrul Islam.

Notably, Prof Arefin Siddique, former Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, was appointed as the 27th VC of Dhaka University in 2009. After completing his tenure in 2017, he returned to his department as a professor. In June 2020, he retired from teaching.
