Travel ban imposed on ex-BGB Chief, his wife

A Dhaka court on Thursday imposed a travel ban on BGB Major General (Retd.) M Shafeenul Islam and his wife, Soma Islam, on Thursday.

Dhaka Senior Special Judge M Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order in response to a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Assistant Director, citing an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption.

According to the ACC petition, the couple is under investigation for alleged abuse of power, financial irregularities and amassing wealth beyond known sources of income. 

It further stated that credible sources suggested Major General (Retd.) Shafeenul Islam might attempt to flee the country to evade the investigation. To ensure a fair and uninterrupted inquiry, the ACC requested the court to impose a travel restriction on them.

Major General Md. Shafeenul Islam was appointed as the Director General of BGB on March 28, 2018, and served in the position until February 17, 2022.
