There is a lot of criticism on social media about the attack by police on leftist organizations'  anti-rape rally in front of the Hotel InterContinental, in the capital last Tuesday.

Despite criticism, no action has yet been taken against the police officer DMP Ramna Zone AC Abdullah Al Mamun involved in grabbing a woman activist hair during a scuffle.

However, DMP stated that the police were not responsible for the incident. Rather, when the protesters attacked the police, the police only prevented them. Police are yet to take any decision on the action of AC Mamun.

Meanwhile, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station on Wednesday against 10 to 12 individuals named and another 70 to 80 unidentified individuals in this incident.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Ramna Division) Masud Alam said on the day the protestors were provoking the police in front of Hotel InterContinental.

The police tried to convince them by holding them behind a barricade while they were marching towards the Chief Adviser's residence. But suddenly they spat on the police and took their helmets and hit them with it. At one point, the police pushed them away, he told the Daily Observer on Wednesday night.

Asked about DMP Ramna Zone AC Abdullah Al Mamun raising his hand on a woman, this official said that a girl hit AC Mamun 7 to 8 times. Mamun did not look at that girl. He did not even look at the other girls.

However, when someone raises their hand on a police officer, will he sit still? He resisted saving himself. So no decision has been taken to take any action against Mamun, said Masud Alam.

He also said that although a case has been filed in this incident, no one has been detained or arrested. They are investigating the entire matter. Action will be taken in this regard later.

The 12 people named in the case statement are -- Bangladesh Chhatra Federation General Secretary Saikat Arif, 26, Bangladesh Chhatra Union Dhaka University Unit President Meghmallar Basu, 28, and General Secretary Main Ahmed, 24, Chhatra Federation Dhaka Metropolitan President Al Amin Rahman, 25, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Eden Women's College Unit President Sumaiya Shahina, 25, Democratic Student Council General Secretary Fahim Ahmed Chowdhury, 25, Jagannath University Chhatra Union leader Adrita Roy, 23, involved in Chhatra Federation politics Arman, 30, Hasan Sikder, 25 and Seema Akhter, 25, involved in the Left student organization Richard, 26, and Aung Aung Marma, 25.

The platform, which was created to demand justice for the rape victims, has demanded the removal of DMP Ramna Division Assistant Commissioner (AC) Abdullah Al Mamun within 24 hours over the police baton charge incident during the "Bangladesh against Rape and Atrocities" mass march. It also demanded exemplary action against the police members involved.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the police headquarters issued a statement on behalf of the Bangladesh Police Service Association.

They said in a statement that at 3:00pm on Tuesday, a protest group of 60 to 70 people, including men and women, tried to move towards the official residence of the Chief Adviser, 'Jamuna,' in the name of an anti-rape march.

When the police, who were assigned to maintain law and order to maintain security and normal traffic flow at nearby important state installations, obstructed them, they attacked them with sticks and threw bricks and stones.

The DMP Ramna Zone Assistant Police Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun, was seriously injured in the attack by the protesters. Several other police personnel were also injured.

The Bangladesh Police Service Association strongly condemns and protests these anti-law and order acts. At the same time, the Bangladesh Police pledges to work tirelessly to implement the ideals and goals of the interim government with professionalism and efficiency.
