
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against five individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ex-Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, in connection with the alleged genocide at Shapla Chattar in the capital on May 5, 2013.
The court has also directed the arrest of former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, and activist Imran H Sarker. The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, approved the prosecution's plea for their arrest.
Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam, alongside Mizanul Islam, argued for the case, with other legal representatives, including BM Sultan Mahmud, Gazi MH Tamim, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Tarek Abdullah, and Shaikh Mahadi, present in the courtroom.
The prosecution confirmed that four additional suspects—former State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, ex-IGP Shahidul Haque, dismissed Major General Ziaul Ahsan, and former police official Mollah Nazrul Islam—have already been apprehended and are currently in custody.
Hefazat-e-Islam initially lodged a complaint with the ICT Chief Prosecutor’s Office on November 27, 2024, accusing 50 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, of involvement in the events at Shapla Chattar. The case has gained significant attention, with legal proceedings now moving forward.
