Launch capsizes with 200 passengers in Rangamati

A launch capsized after striking an underwater shoal at Barkal upazila in Rangamati district on Monday afternoon.

According to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority in Rangamati chairman Md Moinuddin Selim, fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rifat Asma confirmed that approximately 200 passengers were aboard the vessel at the time of the incident.

The launch departed from Rangamati town at around 2:00PM for Barkal and struck the shoal before partially sinking around 4:45PM in the Maischhari channel.

Following the incident, Border Guard Bangladesh personnel rushed to the scene with speedboats to assist in rescuing the passengers.
