CHUADANGA, Mar 9: A local leader of BNP was killed and two others were injured as a clash erupted between two groups of the party over the distribution of VGF rice and TCB cards in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, 50. He was the former organizing secretary of Titudah Union Unit of BNP.
It was known that the incident took place when Rafiq clashed with supporters of Milon Mia, President of Titudah Union BNP, and General Secretary Abul Hashem Toton over the distribution of 10 kg VGF rice cards and TCB cards intended for the underprivileged in the lead-up to Eid-ul-Fitr.
At one stage, the supporters of Milon Mia and Toton attacked on Rafiq with locally-made sharp weapons, killing him on the spot.
Two other persons were also injured at that time.
Superintendent of Police in Chuadanga Khandaker Golam Maula confirmed the incident, saying that additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further collision.
Meanwhile, Organizing Secretary of Chuadanga District BNP Mirza Faridul Islam Shiplu accused the members of the ruling Awami League of infiltrating the BNP to incite the violence for political gain.
