A Dhaka court on Sunday granted a three-day remand for six suspects involved in committing robbery at gunpoint at Banashree gold heist.
The suspects are M Kawsar, M Farhad, M Khalilur Rahman, M Suman, Dulal Chowdhury and Aminul were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. The investigating officer, SI Faridur Rahman of Rampura Police Station, had sought a 10-day remand, but Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam granted three days.
The arrests followed a nationwide operation by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police on Friday.
Authorities recovered 4 vori 9 ana of gold, worth Tk 244,500, a 7.62mm revolver, four rounds of bullets, and a motorcycle used in the crime from their possessions.
The robbery took place on February 23 when Anwar Hossain, owner of Alankar Jewelers, was returning home with 160 vori of gold worth approximately BDT 24.7 million and BDT 100,000 in cash. As he reached his residence in Banashree, a gang of six to seven armed assailants on three motorcycles intercepted him. When he resisted, they shot him multiple times in the left knee and thigh and attacked him with machetes before fleeing with the valuables.
Anwar was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he is now in stable condition. His wife filed a case at Rampura Police Station on February 24.
Police continue their investigation to recover the remaining stolen gold and apprehend any other suspects.
