BARISHAL, Mar 8: Several Lakhs of people are facing communication problem on a five-kilometre (km) deplorable road ranging from Lakutia Bazar in Sadar Upazila of the district to Babuganj College Gate.

According to local sources, this road has developed big and small puddles. There is not an inch of unbroken part across its 5km stretch.

People of Sadar Upazila, Babuganj, Hijla, Muladi and Mehendiganj upazilas communicate on that road.

Sabbir Ahmed of Lakutia-Babuganj area said, the condition of the road has been worse for over one era; it was not repaired ever by any government; all gave hope only; and, a little rain makes the road much worse.

A local school teacher, Saidul Islam said, three years back his younger brother died in a road accident on his way to home from Barishal. It needs a quick initiative to repair the road, he added.

Former chairman of Chadpasha Union in Babuganj Upazila Shamsul Alam Fakir said, the department concerned was informed for more than time for repairing the road. "We have nothing to do if the department does not take initiative."

Babuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNP) Faruq Ahmed said, the condition of the road is truly worse. "Very soon we will contact with the authorities concerned to take a repairing initiative", he added.

Executive Engineer of LGED-Barishal Mohammad Atikul Islam said, in June last, a letter was sent to the LGED head office for repairing the road. After approval, the road repairing will be started, he added.

The road will also be widened by 12 feet to 24 feet including 18 feet carpeting, the official maintained.
