A local BNP leader was killed and two others were injured as a clash erupted between two groups of the party over the distribution of VGF rice and TCB cards in Chuadanga’s Sadar Upazila on Saturday morning.
The deceased, Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, 50, was the former organizing secretary of the Titudah Union BNP.
The conflict reportedly erupted when Rafiq clashed with supporters of Milon Miah, the President of the Titudah Union BNP, and General Secretary Abul Hashem Toton over the distribution of 10 kg VGF rice cards and TCB cards intended for the underprivileged in the lead-up to Eid-ul-Fitr.
Witnesses said the situation escalated when the supporters of Mia and Toton attacked Rafiq with locally made sharp weapons, killing him on the spot.
Chuadanga District Police Superintendent Khandaker Golam Maula confirmed the incident, saying a police team had been deployed to the scene to investigate. He also stated that additional police forces were sent to the area to restore order and prevent further unrest.
In the aftermath of the clash, tensions in the area soared, prompting local businesses to close their shops for safety.
Mirza Faridul Islam Shiplu, the Organizing Secretary of the Chuadanga District BNP, accused members of the ruling Awami League of infiltrating the BNP to incite the violence for political gain.
