Ex-senior secy Ziaul Alam placed on two-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed former senior secretary to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) NM Ziaul Alam on a 10-day remand under cyber security act for allegedly selling citizens’ national ID (NID) information.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order on Thursday as investigating agency Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced him before the court.

Earlier, Ziaul was arrested on Wednesday from Panchlaish area in Chattogram.

One Enamul Haque filed the case with Kafrul Police Station on October 9, 2024.

The police station sub-inspector Subir Ghosh confirmed about filing of the case.

According to the case statements, Digicon Global Services Limited was permitted by the accused to access NID information for commercial purpose. Without ensuring safety of those data reportedly the company sold the information to 182 companies in home and abroad.

However, they embezzled around Tk 20,000 crore, the case statement added.
