Travel embargo imposed on Khairuzzaman Liton, family

A court on Thursday imposed a travel ban on former Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, his wife Shahin Akter and daughters Anika Fariha Zaman and Maisa Samiha Zaman over graft allegations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the ordered following a petition by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Mozammel Haque.

The ACC, in its plea, said that the anti-graft body is probing allegations against Liton and eight former lawmakers from Rajshahi for amassing an illegal wealth of Taka 6,000 crore.

During the investigation, the ACC found evidence of wealth beyond known sources of income against Liton and his family members.

Reliable intelligence further suggests that Liton and his wife have been attempting to leave the country in an effort to transfer their immovable and movable assets. If they manage to flee, the ongoing investigation could be severely disrupted.

Considering these circumstances, the ACC petitioned for a travel ban, which the court has now approved.

AHM Khairuzzaman Liton is a Presidium Member of the Bangladesh Awami League and a former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation.
