A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of tax records belonging to Abdul Malek, former Executive Engineer of Sirajganj branch of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWBD).
The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, following a petition from Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Azmeri Khanam on Wednesday.
According to the ACC’s petition, Abdul Malek, who is now retired, allegedly concealed assets worth Tk 13,16,348 in his asset declaration submitted to the commission.
Additionally, he is accused of acquiring and possessing wealth worth Tk 1,46,65,471 which is inconsistent with his known sources of income.
ACC further alleges that he transferred, converted, and laundered illegally obtained money through bribery and corruption, some of which was sent abroad.
The case has been filed under Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, as well as Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. The investigation is currently ongoing.
ACC argued that in order to conduct a fair and thorough investigation, it is necessary to verify the accuracy of Malek’s income and expenditures and to determine whether he owns any additional undisclosed assets.
As per Section 19 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Rule 20 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Rules, 2007, the commission deemed it essential to seize his tax records for further examination.
