BARISHAL, Mar 4: With unabated diarrhoea spreading in Barishal, dengue and cold disease patients are also increasing in government hospitals.

Despite the mercury level of temperature above the normal, the coming of cold disease patients is not stopping in the hospitals including upazila health complexes.

In the first two months of 2025, over 10,000 diarrhoea patients including men, women and children were admitted to the hospital.

Higher temperature than the normal could not eliminate dengue. In 2024 about 9,000 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals while 64 ones died.

In January and February of the current year, another about 300 dengue patients were admitted.
At present, on an average, ten dengue patients are undergoing treatment in the government hospitals.

Yet according to specialist doctors, three times of higher patients of dengue, diarrhoea and cold diseases are treated outside of the government hospitals. Spreads of such diseases are concerning, they said.

According to sources at the Department of Health (DoH)-Barishal, in November and December, last about 2,500 patients of different diseases including pneumonia were admitted to government hospitals; of them five patients died. In the first two months of the current year, more about 3,500 patients were admitted while three more died.

After being affected by pneumonia, 21-day-old Shahinur Begum died in Lalmohan Upazila Hospital on February 28.
About 9,500 diarrhoea patients were admitted to government hospitals in November and December. Later on, 10,000 more were admitted in January and February, this year. During the last four months, from November to February, the diarrhoea patients exceeded the level of 21,000. No diarrhoea patient so far died.

Despite improved drinking water and sanitation services, it has not been possible to prevent the diarrhoeal situation because of footpath food which is low quality but tasty, said doctors.

There are several thousands of approved and unapproved street shops in the Barishal City Corporation area. These shops are selling substandard, stalled and tasty foods. But there is no awareness making about harmful impact of such food.

DoH's Director Dr Shyamol Krishna Mandal said, there is no alternative to public awareness and resilient activities by the government institutions to prevent the diarrhoeal menace.

He stressed the need for awareness making about spread of Aedes mosquito to prevent dengue disease. He asked diarrhoea and dengue patients for going to doctors before turning critical.

There are adequate stocks of medicines of diarrhoea including IV Saline, antibiotic capsule and metronedazol tablet, the director added.

He further said, "Despite over 50 per cent staff posts remaining vacant, we are continuing treatment of all diseases."
