KHULNA, Feb 22: A train loaded with 30 wagons of molasses which were imported from Pakistan for the first time through the Mongla Seaport, began its journey towards Sirajganj on Friday morning.
Mongla Seaport's Deputy Secretary Makaruzzaman Munshi said, the remaining imported molasses will be transported in phases both by road and rail to Baghabari area in Sirajganj District.
Later on, the imported molasses will be supplied to various feed companies across the country by the importing firm, he added.
A total of 5,500 tonnes of molasses were imported for the first time from Pakistan by the Panama-flagged MV Dolphin-19 ship by a private importing company on February 6.
After being unloaded at the port jetty, the molasses were stored at United Refinery and Bulk Storage Limited at Mongla.
From there, the molasses are now being transported by rail. For several years, Bangladeshi traders had been importing animal feed molasses from India.
Yet, following a sudden increase in import taxes by India, Bangladeshi traders faced difficulties.
