Two separate probe bodies have been formed to probe the vandalism of a Shaheed Minar located at Gunabati Degree College in Cumilla's Chauddagram upazila on Friday.

The upazila administration formed a three-member probe body, led by its Agriculture Officer Jobayer Ahmed, and asked the body to submit its report within three working days. The college authorities also formed a three-member investigation committee, led by its Teachers' Association General Secretary Assistant Professor Sarowar Osman, and asked to submit its report within seven working days.

Teachers, students, BNP leaders and activists placed floral wreath at the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the language martyrs and left the place around 12:45 AM. A group of miscreants later went to the Shaheed Minar and vandalised it.

The vandalism incident went viral on social media where the netizen expressed concern over the issue.

Being informed, law enforcers including police, Army and the officials of the upazila administration visited the spot, said Chauddagram Police Station officer-in-charge Hilal Uddin.

As there was no CCTV camera, it was not possible to confirm who broke the Shaheed Minar right now.

A General Diary (GD) was lodged with the police station in this connection, the OC said, adding that stern action would be taken against those found involved in the incident.

Gunabati Degree College Acting Principal M Abdul Latif said that the Shaheed Minar was constructed in the college in 1968. They formed a probe body in this connection and action would be taken against the accused involved in the incident after getting the investigation report.
