A train loaded with 30 wagons of molasses which was imported from Pakistan to Bangladesh for the first time through the Mongla seaport, began its journey towards Sirajganj on Friday morning.
Mongla Port Deputy Secretary Makaruzzaman Munshi said that the remaining imported molasses will be transported in phases both by road and rail to Baghabari area in Sirajganj District.
The imported molasses will later be supplied to various feed companies across the country by the importing firm, added the port official.
It is worth noting that 5,500 metric tons of molasses were imported for the first time from Pakistan via the Panama-flagged MV Dolphin-19 ship by a private importing company on February 6.
After being unloaded at the port jetty, the molasses were stored at United Refinery and Bulk Storage Limited in Mongla.
From there, the molasses are now being transported by rail.
For several years, Bangladeshi traders had been importing animal feed molasses from India.
However, following a sudden increase in import taxes by India, Bangladeshi traders faced difficulties.
After the change of government in Bangladesh, this marks the first time molasses has been imported from Pakistan.
It is also the first instance of animal feed being imported through Mongla Port.
