Bangladesh will begin their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a high-stakes clash against cricketing powerhouse India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium today. This Group-A fixture promises an intense battle as both teams look to start their tournament journey on a winning note.
The match will begin at 3:00pm (BST).
With only three group-stage matches for each team, every fixture carries immense significance. India, the two-time champions, finished as runners-up in the last edition, while Bangladesh were semifinalists. Bangladesh will look to draw inspiration from past triumphs, including their famous win over India in the 2007 World Cup. The Tigers have pulled off surprises before and they will need a disciplined effort to challenge India's formidable lineup. A win here would be a major boost for either side in their quest for a knockout berth.
Bangladesh enter the contest following a difficult run in ODI cricket. The Tigers have not played an ODI in 2025 and endured back-to-back series defeats against West Indies and Afghanistan, winning just one out of six matches. In contrast, India come into the tournament with confidence having defeated England in a recent home ODI series.
The Tigers will rely on experienced campaigners Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim to guide their batting unit, while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto shoulders the responsibility of leading from the front. The bowling attack, spearheaded by Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed and emerging pacer Nahid Rana, will look to exploit any assistance from the surface. Mehidy Hasan Miraz will be crucial in providing control with both the bat and ball to fill-up the gape of Shakib Al Hasan.
India on the other hand, possess a formidable lineup despite missing their pace ace Jasprit Bumrah. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill will anchor the batting, while the bowling unit featuring Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and young pacer Harshit Rana adds variety. The spin department led by Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja will pose a serious challenge for Bangladesh's batters.
India's historical dominance over Bangladesh in ODIs is evident, with 32 wins in 41 encounters. However, the Tigers have proven to be a formidable challenge in recent times winning three of their last five meetings against India.
The Dubai wicket is expected to be on the slower side making stroke play difficult. However, chasing has been the preferred option in recent matches at this venue, with dew playing a role in the latter stages. Out of 58 ODIs played here, only 22 have been won by teams batting first. The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
