Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto remains optimistic about his side's chances ahead of their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Addressing the media in a pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Shanto exuded confidence emphasizing Bangladesh's balanced squad and their ability to challenge any team. "Our team is balanced in this edition. We believe that we can beat any team. We are not thinking too much about the opponent. If we can implement our plan, we can beat any team any day," he asserted.
Bangladesh have a mixed record against India but have managed to secure significant victories in recent years. Reflecting on past encounters Shanto noted, "If you notice, all eight teams are of good quality. We have good memories against India, Pakistan and New Zealand as well as we have won several matches recently."
The conditions in Dubai are expected to be challenging but Shanto stressed the importance of adaptability claiming, "We have to adapt to both the venues. This wicket is not as high-scoring compared to Pakistan. We played a Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, so we have an idea of what the wicket will be like. Wherever we play, we have to adapt. The boys are eager to do well at both the venues."
Bangladesh will be without their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, a significant loss for the side. Acknowledging Shakib's absence, Shanto remarked, "Of course, we will miss Shakib. It would have been better if he was there." He however, is optimistic about all-rounders in the team like Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
India will be missing their ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, which could provide some respite for Bangladesh's batting lineup. But Shanto downplayed Bumrah's absence stating, "We are not thinking about any specific cricketer. They have many other quality players. We are thinking about how we can implement our plans."
Young pacer Nahid Rana is expected to be a key figure in Bangladesh's bowling attack. Speaking about the youngster, Shanto expressed confidence in his abilities. "The way he is bowling, there will be extra attention on him. But looking at him, it doesn't seem like he is taking pressure even in such a big tournament. He is preparing well. If he gets a chance to play tomorrow, I believe he will give his best."
