A large number of people gathered in five northern districts throughout the day demanding a fair share of Teesta river water and the implementation of the master plan.

Thousands of people took part in the two-day programme by pitching tents at 11 locations.

An organization called the 'Teesta River Protection Movement' called for a 48-hour sit-in programme from Monday morning with the slogan 'Jago Bahe Teesta Bachai'.

More than five thousand people gathered at the helipad field at Dalia Point in Nilphamari, Teesta Barrage, as part of the programme.

Although the programme officially started at 4 pm, from 10 am onwards, ordinary people, including leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliate organizations, gathered at the helipad field with placards, festoons and banners with demands from different places in the district's six upazilas.

A farmer named Rashedul Islam who came to the programme claimed, "Once upon a time, this Teesta River was a blessing for the people of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Rangpur districts. Now this Teesta has become a curse for us. We want to be free from this curse. We do not want to lose our houses and agricultural land."

Habibur Rahman, a resident near Teesta, said, "Our main demand is fair share of Teesta water and the Teesta Master Plan implementation without delay."

Another participant Rafiqul Islam said, "When we don't need water, India releases water. And when we need water, it stops water. We don't want this. We want our neighbouring country, India, to give us fair share of water as per the agreement."

The sit-in programme is being held at two points on the east and west sides of the Teesta Barrage at the call of the 'Teesta River Protection Movement' committee.

Among them, the Nilphamari district BNP is holding a programme on the east side. On the other hand, the Lalmonirhat district BNP is on the west side. Leaders and activists as well as ordinary people have gathered at both places.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir inaugurated the programme in Lalmonirhat in the afternoon.

The two-day programme will conclude with the speech of the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman at 7 pm on Tuesday.

The programme was scheduled to continue from Monday morning to Tuesday night. All arrangements for accommodation and food have been made for these people participating in the Nilphamari programme, said District BNP General Secretary Zahurul Alam.
