Can Bangladesh overcome setbacks to roar in Champions Trophy?

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 kicks off today, with Bangladesh set to face cricketing giants India in their opening match tomorrow. But concerns overshadow their campaign following a disappointing warm-up performance against Pakistan Shaheens raising serious doubts about their preparedness for the tournament.

Before departing for the competition, captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto confidently declared, "We are aiming to become champions." But the Tigers' display in their practice match against Pakistan Shaheens on Monday painted a starkly contrasting picture exposing glaring weaknesses in both batting and bowling.

Batting first, Bangladesh were bundled out for 202 runs in 38.2 overs, a total that Pakistan Shaheens chased down with ease in just 34.5 overs losing only three wickets. The batting lineup faltered with opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim departing for a duck, while experienced players like Mushfiqur Rahim (7), Zaker Ali (4), skipper Shanto (21) and Towhid Hridoy (20) failed to anchor the innings. Mehidy Hasan Miraz top-scored with 44, while Soumya Sarkar contributed 35. Late contributions from Tanjim Hasan Sakib (30) and Nasum Ahmed (15) ensured Bangladesh crossed the 200-run mark. In defense of the modest total, Bangladesh's bowlers struggled to make an impact, with only Nahid Rana, Miraz and Sakib managing a wicket each.

Despite the setback, Shanto remains optimistic. He took to social media on Monday night posting a picture of himself wearing the Champions Trophy jersey with the caption, "We, the formidable Bangladesh Tigers, are ready to roar and conquer in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025! Buckle up, world - a storm is coming!"

Cricket experts often do not count the results of practice matches, but the performance Bangladesh displayed in the warm-up game reflects deeper long-term concerns. Moreover, they are set to play ODI matches for the first time in two months and immediately after concluding the T20-format BPL. Therefore, Shanto and his men must put in significant effort if they want to prevent their confidence from deflating.

As they prepare for their opening clash against India, Bangladesh must urgently address key weaknesses. The batting unit needs to demonstrate greater resilience, particularly against India's formidable pace attack. The inconsistency of the top order, fragility of the middle order and failure to capitalize on partnerships remain pressing concerns.

Additionally, the bowling attack must be more disciplined and aggressive. With India boasting a star-studded batting lineup, early breakthroughs and sustained pressure will be crucial.

The ICC Champions Trophy presents Bangladesh with a golden opportunity to showcase their potential on the world stage. But if they are to back up Shanto's bold words, the Tigers must transform their weaknesses into strengths beginning with their high-stakes encounter against India.
