Thousands of people, residing in Teesta char (riverine areas), gathered and brought out a torch procession on the second day of a 48-hour sit-in program under the slogan "Jago Bahe, Teesta Bachai" (Wake up brothers, Save Teesta) on Tuesday evening.
The torch rally was held in protest of the unilateral withdrawal of water from the Teesta River by India and to demand the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan.
The Teesta River Protection Movement, led by local activists, witnessed a massive turnout with thousands of residents from the Teesta banks joining the rally, holding torches as a symbol of their protest.
The participants emphasized that saving the Teesta is essential to saving the people of the northern region.
They vowed to continue their fight until they secure their rightful share of water and the implementation of the master plan.
The rally was led by Chief Coordinator of the Teesta River Protection Movement Professor Asadul Habib Dulu who stated that if necessary, the movement would take the matter to the international court to demand fair water distribution.
He also called on the government, regardless of who is in power, to implement the Teesta Master Plan without delay.
The rally was marked by enthusiastic chants of "Save Teesta, Save People", "We demand water in Teesta immediately," and "We demand the implementation of Teesta Master Plan."
The protest program united thousands of people in the area for a common cause.
