Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus recently has called for strengthening people-to-people connectivity between Bangladesh and Uruguay through sports, trade, and technology transfer.

The call came during a courtesy call with Uruguay's non-resident Ambassador to Bangladesh, Alberto A. Guani, at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka recently.
Lamiya Morshed, Principal Coordinator for SDG Affairs, Mostaf Quamrus Sobhan, Honorary Consul of Uruguay in Bangladesh and Chairman of Rupali Insurance Co Ltd, besides officials of the Chief Adviser's office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present.

Ambassador Guani has focused on untapped potential for cooperation between the two countries particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, semiconductors, UAV/drones, satellites, and specialized IT technology transfer.

He has praised Bangladesh's pioneering role in social business and noted the growing trade volume between the two countries, which has seen double-digit growth in recent years.

Uruguay currently exports wool, soybeans, and agro-products to Bangladesh, among other goods.

Professor Yunus has emphasised the shared passion for sports, particularly football, as a bridge to deepen ties.

"Both nations have a passion for sports, especially football. We can connect on that. Let us build our cooperation in other spheres as well," he said.

The Chief Adviser also voiced interest in renewable and clean energy cooperation, an area where Uruguay has made significant strides.

To further enhance bilateral relations, Professor Yunus invited Uruguayan investors to explore opportunities in Bangladesh and suggested leveraging Bangladesh's young and energetic workforce alongside Uruguay's technological expertise.

He urged the Ambassador to engage with relevant authorities, including the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), to accelerate growth and collaboration.

Contacted, Mostafa Quamrus Sobhan told the Observer that discussions specially underscored the commitment of both nations to explore new avenues of partnership, paving the way for a mutually beneficial relationship in business, technology, and beyond.
