The students of Barishal University (BU) have been staging a demonstration on the campus for withdrawal of a case filed against them by the university administration on Sunday night.
They formed the torch procession, as the university administration did not withdraw the case filed against the students despite issuing them an ultimatum.
Hundreds of students from different departments of the university gathered in front of the university’s ground floor and formed a torch procession from there around 7:30 PM.
The procession ended at the same place after parading main roads of the campus.
The agitating students alleged the university Vice-Chancellor Dr Shuchita Sharmin held a secret meeting with the Awami League alliance teachers at her residence on Sunday.
Rofiq, a chemistry department student of the university, said that they had given a six-hour ultimatum to the BU administration for withdrawal of the case filed against the students who joined in the ongoing rational movement for the rehabilitation of Awami League supporters.
But, the administration did withdraw the case. They would go for a tougher movement on the campus if their demands were not met soon, he added.
On February 14, a group of students of the university entered the vice-chancellor's residence by breaking the gate, and obstructed a syndicate meeting organised by the VC.
The students started a protest in front of the VC's residence, accusing the meeting of trying to rehabilitate Awami League supporters.
The protesters stopped syndicate members from entering the VC's residence. Upon learning that four members were already inside to attend the syndicate meeting, they broke the gate of the residence and started shouting anti-VC slogans. They urged the syndicate members to leave the VC's residence within five minutes.
On Saturday night, BU security officer Sanwar Parvez Liton lodged a complaint with Bandar Police Station accusing 17 named and 20 to 255 unnamed persons in this connection.
On Sunday, the students issued a 12-hour ultimatum to Barishal University (BU) authorities protesting against the rehabilitation of Awami League supporters at the university.
