Operation Devil Hunt aims to restore stability

Operation Devil Hunt is a nationwide initiative launched by the interim government of Bangladesh with the main objective of combating terrorism and enhancing the nation's law and order situation. Triggered by violent incidents in Gazipur on February 7, 2025, which left many injured and severely disrupted the security environment, the operation was activated swiftly after the government convened an emergency meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs and various law enforcement agencies to address the growing threat of terrorism and crime.

The mission of Operation Devil Hunt is to restore stability, ensure public safety, and eradicate terrorist activities. It specifically targets individuals linked to criminal and terrorist organizations and aims to neutralize the forces causing violence and chaos in the country. Through this operation, the government hopes to restore normalcy by dismantling terrorist networks and reducing criminality across Bangladesh.

The operation involves close cooperation between several key law enforcement agencies, including the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and the Detective Branch (DB), which handles intelligence operations. Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Home Advisor, emphasized that strict measures will be taken to combat terrorism and guarantee public safety during a recent press briefing.

The initial phase of Operation Devil Hunt has yielded positive results. Multiple individuals suspected of ties to terrorist organizations have been arrested, and illegal weapons have been seized in raids. The government has stressed that this operation will be a long-term effort, focused not only on arresting terrorists but also on identifying and dismantling the networks that fund and support terrorism and criminal activities.
In contrast to the 2002 "Operation Clean Heart," which was primarily led by the army with minimal involvement from other sectors, Operation Devil Hunt is a joint initiative that incorporates a broader range of law enforcement agencies from the outset. Additionally, this operation is guided by intelligence shared between multiple agencies, focusing on both terrorist groups and extortionists, while Operation Clean Heart was more focused on top criminals and extortionists.

Operation Devil Hunt also stands out for its transparency. The government has made formal announcements about the operation's goals and areas of focus, such as the violence in Gazipur. In contrast, Operation Clean Heart was initiated without any prior warning, and it involved widespread and sudden raids across the country, including the closure of mobile phone networks. This difference highlights the more public approach adopted in Operation Devil Hunt.

Despite their differences, both operations share a common goal of tackling criminal activity, including extortion. During Operation Clean Heart, numerous political leaders and activists were arrested, and a similar approach has been adopted in Operation Devil Hunt, targeting individuals in political positions suspected of being involved in criminal activities, especially extortion. As of February 7, 2025, the operation has led to the arrest of 5,900 individuals, with several illegal weapons, including foreign pistols, ammunition, and domestic firearms, being recovered. The government has vowed to continue Operation Devil Hunt for as long as necessary, working toward identifying and dismantling the criminal networks that perpetuate violence and unrest in the country.

Operation Devil Hunt represents a major effort by the interim government to restore order, suppress terrorism, and protect the citizens of Bangladesh. With the collective effort of law enforcement agencies and the active participation of citizens, the operation aims to eliminate terrorist groups and criminal networks, ensuring a safer and more secure future for the country.
