As the Bangladesh national team begins training in the United Arab Emirates ahead of the Champions Trophy, cricketers outside the ICC Champion Trophy squad are not staying idle. Several players on the fringes of the national team have joined the Bangladesh Tigers camp to refine their skills and stay match-ready.
The Tigers' training camp kicked off at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday and will run in Dhaka until February 25. Following the conclusion of the Dhaka Premier League, the camp is expected to resume. Among the participants in the first day's practice were Liton Das, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Shamim Hossain Patowari, Mominul Haque, Naeem Hasan, Hasan Murad, Sadman Islam, Ripon Mondal and Mahidul Islam Ankon.
Under the supervision of BCB's coach Sohel Islam, the camp is being facilitated by Mizanur Rahman, Nazmul Islam and Tarek Aziz. The players engaged in fitness drills on the BCB indoor and outdoor fields before transitioning into an extended skill-based session.
Following the first day's training, Sohel Islam shared insights on the camp's objectives. "We sat with the cricketers to discuss their individual improvement areas. Alongside skills development, fitness is also a key focus," he said.
With a busy cricketing schedule ahead-including the Dhaka Premier League in March, a home Test series against Zimbabwe in April and a tour of Pakistan-the Tigers camp aims to keep players in top form.
"Our goal is to ensure those around the national team are always prepared for international matches. The Premier League performances should also positively impact their development," Sohel added.
He emphasized that the national team's coaching staff and the Tigers' coaches are aligned in their approach stating, "We maintain regular discussions to ensure seamless transitions from Tigers to the national team. I have a long-standing understanding with Mohammad Salahuddin and we work together to address player development."
Sohel also acknowledged Liton's recent struggles particularly in white-ball cricket and revealed that specific technical adjustments are being worked on in the camp.
"We have identified areas for improvement. Liton's stroke play was previously smoother, and now there are some temporary issues. We are analyzing the causes and making the necessary adjustments," he explained.
