HC rules over unused mobile data, talk time and SMS

The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking the authorities to explain why unused talk time, internet data, and SMS should not be carried over to the next package when a customer renews their plan.

A High Court division bench, comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi, passed the order on Sunday after hearing a writ petition on the matter.
The court directed the Posts and Telecommunications Secretary and the Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), among others, to respond within four weeks, said Advocate Md Mizanur Rahman Kayes, who represented the case.

The petition highlighted that telecom operators are failing to comply with BTRC’s regulations regarding the rollover of unused services, instead operating at their own discretion.

"I had sent legal notices on January 13 to the Posts and Telecommunications Secretary, BTRC Chairman, and major telecom operators—Grameenphone, Robi Axiata, Banglalink, and Teletalk—urging them to take immediate action. As no steps were taken, I filed the writ with the High Court," the petitioner stated.
