Man beaten to death in Dhaka

A man was beaten to death allegedly by a group of miscreants over land dispute in Dhaka's Keraniganj upazila on Saturday night.

The incident took place at Modhuchar village near Keraniganj border area at around 9:30 PM.

The deceased was identified as Md. Mofzel, 35, son of Soban Sheikh, a resident of Darikanda village in the upazila.

According to locals, there had been a long standing dispute between Jahangir Alam and some Khalasi persons over the border of a land.

An arbitrary meeting was held to settle the dispute on August 4 where the Khalasi men assaulted Mofzel and others loyal to Jahangir over the issue.

The two groups later lodged separate cases with Nawabganj Police Station in this connection. Mofzel went into hiding after an warrant issued against him in a case filed by the Khalasis.

A group of people beat up Mofzel with lethal weapons, leaving him critically injured on the spot.

Chanchal, a neighbour of Mofzel, informed of the incident to Mofzel's family over the phone.

Later, they rushed to the spot and found her dead. The deceased's family lodged a written complaint with Keraniganj Police Station in this connection on Sunday.

Being informed, a team of police recovered the body from the spot and sent it to hospital for a post-mortem examination, said Keraniganj Model Police Station officer-in-charge Sohrab Al-Hasan said.

Police handed the body over to the family member after autopsy, the OC said, adding that the process of filing a murder case with the police station was underway.
