A human chain was formed by the students of Chittagong University (CU) on Sunday, demanding the lifting of the ban on nine female students and calling for the resignation of the university's proctor.

The human chain was held in front of the Shaheed Minar at the university.

Earlier, university authorities had banned 12 students, including 11 female students, for their alleged involvement in an attack on a proctor and general students during an altercation with the students of "Sheikh Hasina Hall" and the proctorial bodies of the university over the removal of the name of the hall at around 11:30 PM on February 5.

Following that incident, the university authority banned the 12 students for several terms the last Thursday.

At the human chain, Jaglul Ahmed, the spokesperson of the Students' Alliance for Democracy, said, "The entire university is ashamed today because of the controversial Facebook post by the proctor. Due to your (proctor's) actions, the reputation of the university has been damaged. You should apologize, or else resign. It was the students who brought down your colleagues; do not bring about your own downfall. The expulsion orders for the female students should be immediately revoked." Ronal Chakma, the president of the Hill Students' Council of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, said, "This expulsion order must be revoked immediately."

During the procession, students chanted various slogans for lifting the ban.

The female students claimed that they are not against breaking the boat, but they urged the university administration to break it.
