Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Sunday withdrew its earlier order of case filing if CNG-run autorickshaw charge extra fare.
BRTA authority confirmed the matter through a letter to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) following CNG drivers' protest blocking different city street in the capital, said Muhammad Talebur Rahman, DMP media and public relation division police commissioner.
On February 10, BRTA wrote to the DMP commissioner to enforce penalties, including a jail term, on autorickshaw drivers who charging fares higher than the meter rate.
The letter referenced Section 35(3) of the Road Transport Act, 2018, which requires contract carriage owners or drivers to charge only the metered fare within the permit area. Violation of this rule could result in up to six months of imprisonment, a fine of up to Tk 50,000, or both. Drivers could also face penalty points on their licences.
This decision made the drivers enraged.
Earlier, the angry drivers started protest in the morning blocking roads across the capital, which caused immense sufferings to the commuters.
Police confirmed that the BRTA letter that instructed law enforcement to file cases against autorickshaw drivers for failing to comply with metered fares had been withdrawn.
