The name of Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) was changed on Saturday. From now on it will be known as 'The National Stadium, Dhaka'.
This was informed in a notification signed by Mohammad Aminul Islam, Secretary of the National Sports Council on the day.
This stadium was built in 1954. At that time the stadium was known as 'The Dhaka Stadium'. The Awami League government renamed it the Bangabandhu National Stadium in 1998.
Being located in the historic Paltan area in Dhaka, all types of games were played in this stadium. After getting the Test status in Cricket, Bangladesh played its first Test at this stadium in 2000. Later, Cricket was moved away from it to Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. The stadium is currently used as a football and athletics venue.
The seating capacity of the venue is about 36,000. Currently, a renovation project of the stadium is underway and at the last stage.
