Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has expressed optimism that a consensus on necessary reforms will be reached swiftly, paving the way for national elections to take place soon.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting with National Consensus Reforms Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Fakhrul emphasized the need for national elections to precede local government polls.
Mirza Fakhrul emphasized that BNP has made its stance clear – national elections should be held first, followed by local government elections.
"We have made it very clear—the national election must be held first, followed by local government elections." He added that the primary objective is to achieve a consensus on the necessary reforms, which would ensure a fair and inclusive electoral process.
The BNP leader highlighted that the Chief Advisor of the National Consensus Commission held the first meeting with political parties to discuss the urgency of reforms. During the meeting, the importance of implementing reforms was underscored, and parties were urged to engage in discussions based on reports submitted by various commissions. Fakhrul noted that the meeting served as an introductory session, with different political parties presenting their views, but no substantive or constructive discussions took place.
"This was just an introduction. Various parties shared their opinions, but no positive or constructive dialogue occurred today. It was more of a familiarization session," Fakhrul explained. He reiterated the BNP's expectation that a consensus on reforms would be reached quickly, leading to the timely conduct of national elections.
The meeting marks the beginning of what could be a critical dialogue process aimed at ensuring a transparent and democratic electoral framework in Bangladesh.
