A mobile court has sentenced two individuals to separate terms of imprisonment over illegally excavating soil from agricultural land using an excavator in Sunamganj’s Dharmapasha upazila on Saturday.
The court, led by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jony Roy, conducted a drive at Bhatgao village of Paikurhati union in the upazila from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday and handed down the verdict against the duo.
The convicts are Moula Mia, 44, a resident of the same village in the upazila, and Apon Sarker, 22, a resident of Halitala village in Habiganj district.
Apon was sentenced to 5 days imprisonment while Moula to 10 daysimprisonment under Balumahal and Soil Management Act, 2023.
An excavator and a lorry were seized during the drive.
The UNO said that the accused gave confessional statements about destroying agricultural land by excavating and selling soil with excavators. Such operations will continue in the future, he added.
"The two people sentenced to separate terms of imprisonment will be sent to prison through a mobile court," said Dharmapasha Police Station Sub-Inspector Bablu Rahman Khan.
