International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor, Tajul Islam, said on Thursday that members of the forces or government officials against whom preliminary evidence of committing crimes against humanity has been found must be suspended and arrested immediately.
Speaking at a press conference at the ICT, he said such a move would be made "according to the law and the advice of the United Nations."
The chief prosecutor also said the UN report could be used as important evidence in the trial of genocide and crimes against humanity against Sheikh Hasina and her government.
Stating that it is possible to try officers of the forces, the chief prosecutor said, "This tribunal is the appropriate place to try those who were involved in the crimes from within the forces. No individual or institution is above the state."
Stating that the UN report on the genocide in the July-August movement will be used as a document in court, Tajul Islam said, "If evidence of crimes is found against any party, there is an opportunity to take action against it. But in that case, the state needs to take initiative."
He also said the UN findings were similar to those of the tribunal, adding that the report was important evidence in the trial of genocide and crimes against humanity against Sheikh Hasina and her government.
Tajul Islam said, since the UN is the largest and most widely accepted organization in the world, their report is completely impartial.
"The report was not made under the influence of any party. The UN investigators did not talk to the prosecution team. They talked to the criminals.
They talked to the victims. They talked where it was necessary to talk. So it is an important document. It can be used as evidence in this court. We will use it during the trial proceedings," the chief prosecutor said.
