Four illegal brick kilns shut down at Gangni

MEHERPUR, Feb 13: A mobile court conducted a drive in Gangni Upazila of the district and shut down four illegal brick kilns and collected a fine of Tk 4.5 lakh on Tuesday afternoon.

The drive was conducted in different areas in the upazila. Saddam Hossain, Executive Magistrate and Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) led the drive.

On the previous day, the drive was conducted in three brick kilns and fined these Tk 2.30 lakh. The kilns were closed.

Saddam Hossain said owners of Rupsha Bricks, Janata Bricks and Three Star Bricks in Akubpur area of Gangni Upazila were fined Tk 1 lakh each and the owner of Samata Bricks was fined Tk 1.5 lakh.

Huge quantities of raw bricks were destroyed by the fire service. These illegally built brick kilns did not have clearance from the Department of Environment.

In addition, there were allegations of burning wood instead of coal. They do not abide by the bricks burning rules. Due to these irregularities, the district administration conducted mobile court drive.

Some 108 illegal brick kilns have been built in Meherpur District without clearance from the Department of Environment.
