The authorities of Chittagong University (CU) have suspended eleven female students and a male student from the university in different terms on Thursday.
They have been suspended for their involvement in assaulting teachers and journalists during performing their duties on the campus.
The decision was made at a meeting of CU Board of Residence Health and Disciplinary Committee held at the university’s VC office in the afternoon.
Confirming the matter, CU proctor Professor Dr Tanvir Mohammad Haidar Arif said that Afsana Enayet Emi, a student of Law department under 2018-19 academic session, has been expelled from the university permanently for her involvement in assaulting the university’s assistant proctor Professor Korban Ali while he was performing his duty at Sheikh Hasina Hall.
A decision was also taken to suspend her academic certificate. Nine other female students from different departments of the university have been suspended for two years, the proctor said.
The university administration, however, suspended a female and a male students from the university for two years over making derogatory remarks on religion, Arif added.
On February 5, a group of students went to vandalise the mural of Sheikh Hasina and the boat symbol located at CU’s Sheikh Hasina Hallof the university.
Some female residential students of the hall prohibited the agitating students from vandalising the mural and the symbol. Later, they locked into an altercation over the issue.
Being informed, a team of CU proctorial body led by assistant proctor Korban Ali rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.
Afsana Enayet Emi, at one staged, assaulted Korban. A video clip of assaulting the assistant proctor went viral on social media on February 11.
Later, the students demanded expulsion of the accused involved in the assaulting incident.
