Sheikh family names removed from 13 universities; gazette issue

A gazette has been issued removing the names of Sheikh family from 13 universities across the country.

The ordinance was exposed for the people by the order of the President on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Law ministry decree the ordinance. The ordinance was signed by Dr Hafiz Chowdhury, secretary of legislative and parliament related to the ministry.

According to the ordinance, due to the confusion caused by the use of similar names for the naming of multiple public universities, it is appropriate and necessary to amend the university-related laws to define the identity and location of the universities. And since the parliament is dissolved and it has been satisfactorily established by the President that the necessary conditions for taking immediate action are present, the President, in exercise of the power conferred by Article 93(1) of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, promulgated and issued the ordinance.

Among the 13 universities, 10 universities were named by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one was named by Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, while others two were named by Sheikh Hasina.

Earlier, on January 16, 2025, Adviser for the Ministry of Youth and Sports Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya, said that the government had taken the decisions to change the names of those universities which were named by Sheikh family through a Facebook.

The decisions were implemented after about one month.

Sheikh Hasina University, Netrakona was renamed Netrakona University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University, Kishoreganj renamed Kishoreganj University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University, Naogaon renamed Naogaon University, and Meherpur Mujibnagar University renamed Meherpur University.

The name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University was changed to Gazipur Agriculture University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Shariatpur Agriculture University changed to Shariatpur Agriculture University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University changed to Bangladesh Digital University, Bangamata Sheikh Fajilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University, Jamalpur changed to Jamalpur Science and Technology University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Pirojpur changed to Pirojpur Science and Technology University.
