Passenger trains start operating on Jamuna Railway Bridge

Sirajganj, Feb 12: Passenger trains have started operating on the newly built Jamuna Railway Bridge, establishing a direct rail link between Dhaka and northern districts.

The first passenger train, the Silk City Express, traveling from Rajshahi to Dhaka, crossed the Bridge on Wednesday morning.

It entered the bridge at 11:18am, marking the beginning of passenger train operations on the Jamuna Railway Bridge.

But, the formal inauguration programme of the bridge will take place on February 18.

Project Director of the Jamuna Railway Bridge Al Fattah Mohammad Masudur Rahman said that the Silk City Express is the first train to travel across the newly constructed bridge, located to the north of the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge. Other trains will follow according to their schedule in the days to come.

The 4.8 kilometer-long Jamuna Railway Bridge, which was constructed at the cost of Tk 16,781 crore, has two tracks, but initially, trains will run on only one track in both directions.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded around 72.40 percent as loan support while rest 27.60 percent was funded from local resources, according to the project officials.

A formal inauguration programme on February 18, that train services will commence on both tracks.
